Here's the short answer for a party of six in Panama City Beach: you'll almost always be booking a house built for more than six, and you should. It does not take pets, so rule it out early if the dog is coming.

The trade you're actually making: beachfront or a block back

This is the decision that changes the trip, and it's the one most listing sites bury. On the west end, houses sit either directly on the sand or one street, sometimes one house, back from it. Both are good. They produce different weeks.

Wander Panama Retreat is beachfront on the private sands of Bid-A-Wee, on the quieter west end, a short drive from 30A. For six guests specifically, I'd lean beachfront if this is a swimming-and-reading week, and one back if it's a cooking-and-pool week, because the set-back houses tend to have the privacy walls and the deep backyards.

What six people actually do with a house this size

They cook. Six is the group size where eating out every night stops being fun and starts being logistics, and these kitchens are built for twice that number, which makes dinner for six easy rather than a project. Golf carts and bikes come with several of the homes, and on this end of the beach a cart is genuinely more useful than the car: Front Beach Road is where everything is, and parking it is nobody's idea of a holiday.

Two things worth knowing about the pools. They're private, one group at a time, and heating is seasonal and charged separately where it's offered, so if you're coming between October and spring and want warm water, say so when you book rather than after you arrive. And the big outdoor setups out here (built-in grills, outdoor kitchens, fire pits, cabana lounges) vary house to house. Where you'll go once you're here

Six people fit in one cart or one car, which makes this an easy place to explore without splitting up. A few things I'd point you at:

• St. Andrews State Park, out at the east end off Thomas Drive, with a fishing pier on the Grand Lagoon and rocky jetties you can climb or fish from. Its beach is regularly named among the best in the country.
• Shell Island, seven miles of undeveloped barrier island reachable only by boat. The official ferry crossing takes about fifteen minutes and drops you somewhere with no buildings on it at all.
• Panama City Beach Conservation Park, inland northwest of the beach, nearly three thousand acres of pine plantation and cypress domes with loop trails from well under a mile to eleven. Free, with parking and restrooms at the trailhead on Conservation Park.
• Gayle's Trails, more than twenty-five miles of paved and unpaved path starting at Frank Brown Park and feeding into the Conservation Park system. If the house comes with bikes, this is what to do with them.
• Pier Park for shopping and a Grand IMAX, with live music at Tootsies Orchid Lounge. The Russell-Fields Pier runs fifteen hundred feet out into the Gulf, and walking it costs a few dollars.

For dinner: Schooners is a beach bar sitting right on the sand, Runaway Island does mostly seafood across two levels with a deck and a boardwalk out to the beach, and Captain Anderson's on Grand Lagoon is where you go to watch the fishing fleet come in and unload. Over the bridge in Historic St. Andrews, Uncle Ernie's is the one locals name. Dee's Hang Out, Saltwater Grill, Firefly and Dat Cajun Place all turn up repeatedly on local lists, and Patches is a small place on the east end near the state park.
