Where to stay for St. Andrews State Park

The park sits at the far east end of the beach, off Thomas Drive, and the gate opens at eight in the morning. That one fact shapes the whole trip. If your group wants the jetties, Gator Lake Trail and the Shell Island boat before the lots fill, you want to be on the Thomas Drive side of town, where the drive is straight and short. Two of our houses sit on that road. Most of the rest of our Panama City Beach portfolio is out west, in Laguna Beach and Bid-A-Wee, which means a longer morning in the car and a much quieter stretch of sand outside the door.

Both are legitimate answers. Which one is yours depends on how many mornings you actually plan to spend inside the park.

If the park is the reason you're coming, stay on Thomas Drive

Thomas Drive is the road into the park. It runs east past the beachfront condos, bends sharply left, and continues through the gates, where it becomes State Park Lane. Entry is eight dollars a vehicle, so one car for the whole group is the cheap way to do it, and the park is open from eight until sunset every day of the year.

Two of our largest houses are on that road. Sanctuary & Reserve is two luxury homes on Thomas Drive combined into a single rental for up to 48 guests: twelve bedrooms, fifteen bathrooms, two private pools, two hot tubs, elevators and game space. It's the house for a reunion or a wedding party that has outgrown the idea of splitting into three rentals. New Thomas Dr 8018 is a newer, five-story build with more than 4,500 square feet, sleeping 24, and its neighbour New Thomas Dr is a four-story beachfront-facing home for the same number.

The other reason to like this corridor has nothing to do with the park: it's where you'll eat. Schooners, Pineapple Willy's, Dat Cajun Place, Capt Max's Bar & Grill, Dee's Hang Out and The Grand Marlin are all on or just off Thomas Drive, and Longboards is further along at 8746. After a day on the jetties, nobody in your group wants a long drive to dinner.

The trade if you'd rather have the quiet beach

Our west-end houses are further from the park gates, and the people who book them know it. They're choosing Bid-A-Wee and Laguna Beach for the shoreline: fewer people, no high-rises, and in Bid-A-Wee a private deeded beach reserved for homeowners and their guests.

Bid-A-Wee Sea Haven is a newly built three-story estate for up to 20, with a private saltwater pool that can be heated and Gulf views from the upper floors. Chat N Chill sits directly across from the same private sand, a six-bedroom for 20 with an outdoor kitchen and enough separate living rooms that one group can watch a game while another gets toddlers down. Teddy's Heaven and Heavenly Day both sit directly on the Bid-A-Wee sand, each with a hot tub, and both put you a short drive from 30A in the other direction.

A practical way to sort it: if the park is one day of a week-long stay, the west end is the better base and you make that drive east once with a cooler in the car. If the park is the trip, don't add the commute.

Matching the house to the count

Group size narrows this faster than anything else. Our Panama City Beach homes run from a four-bedroom for ten up to that 48-guest combination, and the useful bands are these:

• Up to 10. Bid-A-Wee Beach Home, four bedrooms in the private Bid-A-Wee neighbourhood, with a stair gate, window guards, a high chair, a box of toys and one bench-style dining table that seats all ten looking out at the garden. It's also wheelchair accessible. There's no grill of any kind, so plan dinners accordingly.
• Around 14 to 16. Downtime Laguna Tides for 14, with a chef's kitchen built around a quartz island and a gas range, a six-seat street-legal golf cart, five beach cruisers, and public beach access a minute or two's walk across Front Beach Road. Downtime Laguna Dune for 16 is the pet-friendly one: dogs only, two maximum, with approval.
• 20 to 26. Chat N Chill and Bid-A-Wee Sea Haven at 20. Laguna Haven at 26 is beachfront in Laguna Beach with eight bedrooms, eight baths, an elevator to every floor, a poolside half bath, and an outdoor kitchen running a Lynx grill, a built-in griddle and two Green Eggs. Panama Beach Dunes reaches 26 by combining two five-bedroom houses, which suits two families who want their own front door.
• Beyond that. Sanctuary & Reserve, on Thomas Drive, at 48.

The details that decide it for families

Cribs and high chairs are what people call about. A crib is listed at Bid-A-Wee Beach Home, Chat N Chill, Downtime Laguna Dune, Downtime Laguna Tides and Laguna Haven, with a high chair at all of those except Laguna Dune. Laguna Haven goes furthest, keeping baby gates, a stroller, a Pack 'n Play and a high chair on site, plus beach chairs and a beach cart in the garage. The cart matters more than it sounds when the walk is long and the children are carrying nothing.

Pool heating is seasonal and costs extra: available from the first of October to the first of May, pool and spa warmed together to 86 degrees at most, and it has to be requested ahead so the water is ready when you arrive. The daily rate differs by house. Every home with a pool carries a pool alarm, which Florida requires.

Parking is the quiet constraint on a big group. Bid-A-Wee Beach Home fits four cars, Downtime Laguna Tides three or four on the paver drive, Downtime Laguna Dune three. If ten adults are arriving in six vehicles, tell us before you book rather than after.

Getting around once you're here

A car is the honest answer for the park run. Golf carts come with Laguna Haven, Downtime Laguna Tides and Downtime Laguna Dune, and they're the right tool for Front Beach Road, the nearest beach accesses and dinner close to home rather than a cross-town drive. Laguna Haven adds six bikes, Laguna Tides five cruisers, and the flat coastal bike path runs east and west for miles from there. Uber and Lyft work reliably across the beach. Northwest Florida Beaches International is about half an hour east of the Laguna Beach houses.

What to tell us when you enquire

Two things get you to the right house quickly: your head count, and whether the park is your anchor or one day among several. From there, ask about the specifics that genuinely vary between properties, the pool heating rate for your dates, whether dogs are allowed, how many cars fit, and which child equipment is actually in the closet.

If Shell Island is on your list, check the current boat schedule with the park before you fix dates. The trips run seasonally, broadly spring through the end of summer, and the window shifts.
